LEARNING
STYLES (Jean Moennich)
16 August, 2004
This week Jean gave a
presentation on learning Styles. She highlighted the 3 main learning styles,
Auditory (listening), Visual (seeing) and Kinaesthetic (touching/moving).
Olfactory (smelling) and Gustatory (tasting), were noted to be less common.
It was pointed out that the
teacher needs to be aware that most learners have different predominant
learning styles, and hence the teacher should give a wide range of different
kinds of input to appeal to as many learners as possible.
It could also be useful to make
learners aware of their own styles and how they may best exploit that
knowledge, (e.g. if you are mainly visual, use pictures, colours and
mind-maps when making notes)
See the related attachments for
a test to find your, or your students' learner style and some suggestions of
activities you can do to appeal to the different styles.
We also looked at how the
language we use reflects our style (e.g. Visual people may say "I see
what you mean" "That sounds good", Kinaesthetics may say
"I can't get a hold of this" etc..)
In addition eye movements may
show how we are accessing thoughts in our head. (e.g. when we look up we are
seeing things, when we look to the right we are hearing things, etc.) We
tried out one activity that uses this in the classroom.
Finally, Andy gave some
interesting insights into how Learner styles or Representation systems
(VAKOG) are used in NLP and how NLP can be used in teaching, business,
therapy or generally just to live a fuller, deeper and happier life.
